Approximately 50 vehicles have been smeared with what appears to be human blood in the Germany's municipality of Hanau close to Frankfurt, police confirm law enforcement.
Cars, building surfaces and postboxes were defaced, occasionally with swastikas, they announced in a official communication.
Police report they were notified in the late hours on Wednesday night, when a man observed that a vehicle in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish-hued liquid.
The substance had been applied in the pattern of a Nazi symbol, they stated.
Police then discovered many other vandalized automobiles and house walls in the nearby vicinity.
These symbols are prohibited in Germany under regulations outlawing the public display of Nazi-era symbols.
Officials state preliminary tests suggest the fluid was most likely blood from a person.
"There is still no clue as to where it came from; officials are currently not informed of any harm in relation with the incident," they stated.
Municipal representatives announced they were trying "to unravel the case" and have requested to the public for information.
A senior official said the vandalism left him speechless and had to be addressed promptly.
"This act affects the center of Hanau and reopens the pain of the extremist violent incident five years ago," he posted on online, referring to the killing of nine individuals by a gunman targeting residents of immigrant origin in 2020.
