The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the US on five Europeans involved in fighting digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders including the French president charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans targeted individuals that were central to efforts to introduce legislation governing American tech companies.
“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in condemning the decision.
The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, along with several activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
