No fewer than thirteen passengers killed and ninety-eight hurt in train derailment in Mexico.

A fatal train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the pace and handling of the country's major public works projects.

The disaster took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route developed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.

“We are going to meticulously determine the cause of this tragedy,” stated the head of state.

The leader confirmed that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The president noted plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.

Key Undertaking of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the previous administration, whose term ended the previous year. This venture was intimately linked to his administration's strategic agenda for the southeastern region.

Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to stimulate the economic fortunes of a comparatively poorer part of the country.

Building Management and Worries

The development of both rail lines was supervised by the army, marking a notable increase of its role in public infrastructure. They were executed at an rapid pace, beating forecasts to be at least partly opened before the end of that administration.

However, this rushed timetable had also fueled persistent apprehensions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This includes an earlier accident this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen two non-fatal derailments.

Appeals for Investigation and Halt

In the wake of the catastrophe, the head of a major opposition party urged an immediate suspension in the building and running of all such projects.

This pause was proposed pending a full technical review. The party declared that the situation "calls for immediate answers."

In response, the national leader asserted that the train had been operating in complete compliance with all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the construction and operation of these strategic undertakings.
