Patients Coming Off Weight-Loss Jabs Gain Back Weight Far More Rapidly Than Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis suggests that patients who discontinue new slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on lost weight far faster than those who halt traditional lifestyle plans.

Research printed in a prominent health publication points out that while overweight people often shed substantial amounts of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"People buying these drugs must be cognizant of the danger of fast weight regain when the treatment ends," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery suggests a reversion to pre-treatment mass within about one and a half years.

Comparing Therapies

The research, which examined 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, contrasted the effects of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.

Scientists emphasize that people who lose weight through dieting generally have a less rapid creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

Explaining the Rapid Regain

Nutrition scientists propose the mechanism of the drugs accounts for the heightened rebound.

The injections copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls feelings of fullness.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and may also diminish sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Withdrawal of this medication leads to hunger is unsuppressed, making binge eating far more likely."

A Chronic Disease?

The NHS recommend the injections for individuals with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians say that, given the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy is often long-term.

This perspective is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "underscore the persistent nature of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

User Experiences

Individuals who have stopped the medication explain a sudden resurgence of appetite.

"It felt as if a trigger that goes on and you become ravenous," described an individual.

This challenge is compounded if users have not adopted lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Significant Use

Survey data suggest that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with demand remaining high.

  • Use is higher among women than men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Finally, experts stress that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent solution and maintained weight loss hinges on combined lifestyle support.
