The Film 'Together' Is Now Streaming, and It Might Make or Break Your Partnership.

Consider this a dare for partners in committed relationships who appreciate horror films: Get comfortable with your partner and stream Together. The 2025 indie hit just made its online premiere on the Hulu service. At first glance, it may seem like typical physical horror, but beneath Together exists a profound meditation about how we choose to love each other.

An Introductory Film Delving into The Nuances of Love

Together marks the debut feature-length film for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It features the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, partners that have been together for a decade. United in marriage in actuality in 2017, Franco and Brie bring a unique chemistry to their portrayals, skillfully embodying both the joys and frustrations of a long-term relationship.

The story commences when Tim and Millie transition from the metropolis to the rural area for professional reasons. A commonly used narrative setup, admittedly, but that’s mostly where the tropes conclude. Together evolves into as much a psychological exploration of the couple's dynamic as it is a film about physical terror.

A Paranormal Spark

While trekking near their rural residence, a tempest descends, and the protagonists discover an underground cave. After being trapped overnight there and eventually escaping, a mysterious influence begins influencing the duo. This force compels a paranormal intimacy between them that goes far beyond typical partnership.

The complete narrative is a gradually intensifying fright fest, interspersing bits of dreamlike terrors, gross (but not excessively graphic) body horror, and genuinely funny interactions (sometimes during something disturbing). Michael Shanks skillfully blends these components expertly and delivers them in a slowly mounting atmosphere of fear.

Layered Performances

A large part of Together is solely Brie and Franco, and they deftly portray countless layers to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie's sense of self and sense of connection is suffering due to a emotional and physical gap. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his hesitance to focus on anything other than his struggling artistic pursuits slowly bubbles to the surface.

In contrast, Tim's character experiences isolation and cut off by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve relocated rural and far away from his network of friends. He fears the notion of completely losing his personal autonomy in another person. This fear is further exacerbated by the circumstance he can’t drive and is dependent on Millie for mobility.

Shanks’ smartest move is that he never makes Tim or Millie the definite antagonist.

Tim and Millie grapple with the type of challenges that arise in long-term unions over a long period. Deep down, they continue to care for one another. They still laugh together, offer support, and share intimately at times. But under the surface, there’s an persistent undercurrent of doubt about their future together.

Allegory and Meaning

While the otherworldly presence in Together symbolize these fears of excessive reliance and fully committing to a partner, the allegory does not come across as clumsy or self-important. Instead, these visceral horror elements provide a ideal counterpart to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the supernatural and the personal enhance each other in harmony.

A Debated Finale

Together’s ending, which remains unspoiled, has created disagreement on the film’s ultimate message about unhealthy partnerships. It has been said that unattached audience members have understood the narrative as a powerful case for avoiding commitment. Conversely, some couples having disagreements found that the film ultimately assisted them reconcile.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own interpretation could potentially serve as a revealing measure of how you perceive partnership. Will the ending sow anxiety and horror, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you identify in one of the characters and yell at the screen, or simply turn to your significant other and state, “I understand that choice”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an exploration you can undertake right now.

Together is streaming on Hulu's platform as of this moment.
